We are staying with family, and my toddler has two parents and three grandparents to look after her, in other words, to spoil her. And one of the "services" she has used and abused during our stay is the availability of readers. She has become quite addicted to television, but if you ask her if she wants to have a book read to her, she will mostly answer yes, and with enthusiasm. So for the past two days she has spent hours on various laps being read to in Norwegian and in French, sucking on her thumb and frowning in complete concentration as she follows along the stories she has just heard a few hours before and knows by heart now.
For parents who have both pursued higher education, and have both enjoyed reading a lot, especially as children, there is nothing more heartwarming than watching your child being totally obsessed by books. She may love television, but books, and the company of the adult reading them to her, are even better, and that is just great.
