At the beginning...

I taught myself how to knit about four years ago and started knitting a sweater with the help of a book, but with no pattern and no instructions, just knit, purl, knit, purl until... I'm not sure what I was thinking but in my mind the hole for the arms and everything would come into place completely naturally. Then I bought some wool to make a baby blanket for my soon-to-be niece, and then I moved and was very busy and forgot all about knitting.
Four years later a couple of friends of mine decided to form a knitting club. Thankfully one of these friends is an accomplished knitter because the rest of us range from complete beginner to "I can knit an entire row without losing a stitch" beginner. We meet once a week and get much needed help on various projects.
Being ambitious and probably a bit over-zealous I thus embarked on two projects. The first was to finally make that baby blanket. My niece is now three so it will be too small for her, but I still want to make the blanket and will give it to whatever baby comes after it's finished. I'm knitting 16 squares which I will then sew together. Once I got comfortable with casting on and off and knitting and purling I decided I was an expert and just walked into a knitting store, found a nice pattern and bought a mountain of wool. I decided that the only way to be good at something was to get a lot of practice, so I'm knitting a jacket, the length of which should ensure lots of practice.
