I've been using skype for over 6 years
(I think. The early stages may have been on another programme, but
I've been a Skype user for a long time, and everyday, sometimes for
hours) and it has brought me many joys, including one today. I was,
as always, online but doing something else when I saw that a friend,
who is not often on, was available. Just for the fun of it I tried
the video link and we spent the next hour chatting away, with a few
interruptions for her to go a) scream at her kids b) rescue her kids
from the towering stairs or their threatening sibblings or c) check
that her kids were not going through with an elaborate plan to flush
their little brother.
Because she we have small children and
an inconvenient time difference, we have kept in touch here and there
with a few chats or e-mails, but using the video today was something
different. I got to see all her children (whom I have not met in
person as I moved away before she had her first batch), and I just
felt like I was sitting right there in her livingroom. I was even
knitting as we were talking and enjoying her company.
It was my first day back «at work»
(it's an internship to get my teaching degree, so it's not
contractual paid work, but it's work nonetheless) since December and
I had lots of friendly encounters and surprises, but chatting with
and seeing a good friend is priceless, and I have Skype to thank for
that.
