Didier Cuche announced that at, at the ripe old age of 37, he will be retiring at the end of the season, and it makes me grateful to have been able to follow him and cheer for him all these years. He's just a nice guy from Switzerland, always smiling and always positive. He didn't give excuses after excuses when things didn't go well, and he just really enjoyed things when they went well. Didier has a bad habit of collecting second places, and of crashing at major events, but I've never seen him depressed or whiny about any of it. Just a positive guy with an amazing talent for barreling down a ski slope at deadly speeds.
Colourful athletes are fun to watch, crazy athletes are interesting to watch, but nice athletes are always great to cheer for. And as a sports commentator wrote about a Norwegian athlete recently (no need for names...), he wouldn't go any slower if he were less obnoxious.
So thank you for Didier. I don't think any skier will be able to replace him in my heart. The Swiss ski team will certainly miss him and so will his fans.
